❃ Stag Beetles are Britain’s largest native ground-dwelling beetle. Despite being bugs, they’re usually bigger than the small chocolate bar you eat after dinner—with adult females ranging from 5 cm long to males reaching 7 cm long.
❃ Stag Beetles can fly! Not just for fun, though, but male counterparts of these beetles will fly out to look for a mate between May and August. Females can also fly, but rarely do so. Females are known to release pheromones, though, to aid males when looking for their mates.
❃ Male Stag Beetles have incredibly large mandibles that may look familiarly close with deer antlers. During the mating season, males use these antlers to wrestle other males—grabbing each other and throwing each other to the ground. Bug wrestling at its finest.
