Carl Linnaeus first described the great white shark in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. He named it Squalus Carcharias. The generic name Squalus is the Latin word for "shark." The specific epithet Carcharias means "sharp," referring to the shark's teeth.
The great white shark is a large member of the Lamnidae family, which also includes the mako shark and porbeagle shark. It is one of four species of white sharks, along with the smooth hammerhead, the reef whitetip, and the sandbar shark. These sharks are collectively known as "white sharks" or "great whites."
