Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family. They are black and white and can grow up to 32 feet long. Orcas live in all the world's oceans and eat a wide variety of prey, including fish, seals, and walruses.
Orcas are highly social animals and live in pods that can number dozens or even hundreds of animals. They use vocalizations to communicate with one another, and these vocalizations can be quite complex. Orcas also engage in cooperative hunting techniques, helping take down large prey items.

Beluga whales live in cold arctic waters, where they feed on fish, crustaceans, and other marine life. They migrate south in the winter to warmer waters.

Narwhal is Arctic whales that live year-round in the icy waters of the Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait, off the coasts of Greenland and Canada. These whales are shy and elusive, and little is known about their behavior or ecology. They are occasionally spotted in open water during the summer months, but they are most commonly seen swimming along pack ice edges or hauled out on an ice floe.
Narwhals have a thick layer of blubber that helps them stay warm in cold water. They also have a very low metabolic rate, which allows them to conserve energy when food is scarce. Their diet consists mostly of fish, but they may also eat crustaceans and other invertebrates.
Majestic and mysterious as they are, they truly pique a certain interest. If you're looking to find more about these almost-mythological creatures, here's our Narwhal Whale Guide!

Sperm Whale

The sperm whale is the largest toothed predator on Earth. It can reach up to 60 feet in length and weigh up to 45 tons. Sperm whales are found in all the world's oceans but prefer deep waters.
They are black or dark grey and have a distinctive V-shaped head. However, the sperm whale's most distinguishing feature is its huge lower jaw, which houses a set of teeth up to 10 inches long. These teeth are used to catch and eat prey such as squid, octopus, and fish.
Sperm whales are social animals and live in groups called pods. They communicate with each other using clicks, whistles, and moans. Sperm whales are not considered endangered, but they are listed as a "vulnerable" species.

Long-Finned Pilot Whale

The common names of the two species refer to the comparative length of the pectoral fin compared to overall body length. However, without examining their skulls, it's difficult to tell them apart because they appear so similar.
The back of a pilot whale is dark brown, gray, or black with a pale marking behind the eye, belly patch, genital patch, and anchor-shaped chin patch. The whale's dorsal fin bends backward. The scientific name refers to the whale's bulbous melon on its head.
Long-finned pilot whales are generally larger than short-finned pilot whales. Males in both species are larger than females. Long-finned pilot whale females grow to be 6.5 m long, while males may reach 7.5 m in length. Their weight averages 1,300 kg for women and 2,300 kg for males.
Pilot whales can be found in all seas. The ranges of the two species overlap in temperate seas, although long-finned pilot whales tend to prefer colder water than short-finned pilot whales. Typically, whales reside along coastlines, focusing on the continental shelf break and slope. Pilot whales are nomads by nature, but they may stay in locations as far away as Hawaii and California's coast.

Short-finned pilot whales may be found in both tropical and temperate seas throughout the world. Along with the long-finned pilot whale, they are one of two known species of pilot whale. The two species differ in size, appearance, coloration, and pattern. It is difficult to distinguish between the two species in the field and at sea.
The short-finned pilot whale is a long-living, sluggish breeder that is highly sociable. They are found in large groups of 15 to 30 whales with close family members, and they tend to dwell in localized permanent populations, although some have larger ranges. Pilot whales feed almost entirely on squid, with a little fish.
They are most often spotted along the coast near to the continental shelf, although some populations have been discovered to range into deep, open ocean regions such as the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Pilot whales are frequently involved in mass strandings owing to unknown reasons.
Final Thoughts
Toothed whales are some of the fascinating creatures on Earth. They are incredibly intelligent and have complex social lives.
While humans may hunt them for their meat and blubber, we must remember that they are still wild animals that should be respected and protected.
We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about these amazing creatures as much as we enjoyed writing this post.
