THE DESERT DWELLER

❃ The sand cat (Felis margarita) is a small wild feline specially adapted to some of the harshest deserts in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Central Asia. Roughly the size of a domestic cat, it has sandy-colored fur that provides excellent camouflage against its surroundings. Even the bottoms of its paws are covered in dense fur, helping protect them from scorching sand while making its tracks surprisingly difficult to spot.

❃ When desert temperatures soar during the day, sand cats retreat into underground burrows and emerge after dark to hunt. Their unusually large ears provide exceptional hearing, allowing them to detect rodents and other small animals moving above or beneath the sand. Remarkably, sand cats can survive without regularly drinking free-standing water, obtaining much of the moisture they need directly from their prey.

❃ Solitary and elusive, sand cats are rarely encountered in the wild despite occupying an enormous geographic range. Their remote habitat and secretive nighttime behavior make them challenging for scientists to study, and threats such as habitat degradation and declining prey populations affect them in parts of their range. Perfectly equipped for extreme heat, scarce water, and shifting sands, the sand cat is one of the desert's most remarkable little predators.
