THE BOOMERANG-HEADED AMPHIBIAN

❃ Long before dinosaurs ruled the land, a strange amphibian slipped through the freshwater environments of the Early Permian. Diplocaulus is instantly recognizable for its extraordinary boomerang-shaped skull, formed by two long projections extending from the back of its head. Living roughly 275 million years ago, this unusual creature is known from fossils found in what is now Texas. 

❃ Beneath that remarkable head was a relatively slender body built for life in ponds and streams. Scientists are still uncertain exactly why Diplocaulus evolved its enormous skull, although its shape has been suggested to have played a role in swimming. The broad head may have influenced how the animal moved through the water, giving this ancient amphibian one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the fossil record. 

❃ Diplocaulus belonged to the extinct nectrideans, a group of early tetrapods that disappeared long before the modern age. Today, its fossils preserve a snapshot of a remarkably experimental chapter in vertebrate evolution — a time when amphibian-like animals explored body shapes and lifestyles unlike anything alive today. Its bizarre boomerang skull remains one of the most memorable designs left behind by the Permian world
