❃ The Hercules beetle is one of the largest rhinoceros beetles in the world, with males instantly recognizable by their extraordinary pair of horns. One curves forward from the thorax while another projects from the head, creating a formidable pincer-like structure that can account for much of the beetle’s total length. Males use these oversized horns to wrestle rivals, lifting and tossing competitors when battling for access to females.

❃ Named after the legendary Greek hero Hercules, these beetles have an impressive reputation for strength. While popular claims that they can lift 1,000 times their own body weight are exaggerated, Hercules beetles are still remarkably powerful for their size. Their strong legs and muscular bodies help them climb through the tropical forests of Central and South America, while their larvae spend much of their development feeding on decaying wood.

❃ Hercules beetles are just as remarkable in appearance as they are in strength. Males typically have dark heads and horns with wing covers that can range from yellowish to olive green and are often decorated with dark spots, while females lack the enormous horns and are generally darker in color. Even more unusually, the color of a male’s wing covers can change with humidity, making this already impressive insect one of the most fascinating giants of the beetle world.
