THE GIANT SEA SCORPION
❃ Gliding through the shallow waters of the Silurian and Devonian seas, Pterygotus was one of the most formidable eurypterids — the extinct aquatic arthropods popularly known as sea scorpions. With an elongated body, broad swimming appendages, and powerful grasping claws at the front, it was built for life as an active aquatic predator. Some species of Pterygotus reached well over a metre in length, making them giants among Paleozoic arthropods.
❃ Its most striking feature was its pair of enlarged chelicerae, or claw-like feeding appendages. These robust pincers were equipped with teeth and were adapted for capturing prey, while its paddle-shaped rear appendage and flattened telson helped it move and steer through the water. Unlike modern scorpions, Pterygotus was not a true scorpion but an extinct member of the chelicerates.
❃ Pterygotus belonged to a remarkable lineage that lived from the Silurian into the Devonian, roughly 428–391 million years ago. Its relatives included some of the largest arthropods ever known — with the closely related Jaekelopterus reaching an estimated 2.5 metres. Fossils of pterygotids have been discovered across multiple continents, revealing a remarkably widespread group of ancient aquatic predators.
