THE TWO-CRESTED PREDATOR

❃ Roaming the warm landscapes of what is now North America roughly 190 million years ago, Dilophosaurus was one of the earliest large predatory dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period. Its long, lightweight skull carried a pair of thin, rounded crests rising above the eyes, giving it an unmistakable silhouette. With a slender body, powerful hind legs, and a long balancing tail, it was built for an active life among the forests and floodplains of the ancient Jurassic world.

❃ Those twin crests were among Dilophosaurus's most remarkable features, although their exact purpose remains uncertain. They were too delicate to serve as weapons, and scientists have suggested they may have played a role in display or recognition between individuals. Beneath them was a narrow jaw lined with sharp teeth, suited to a carnivorous diet, while its long limbs suggest an agile predator capable of moving efficiently across the landscape in pursuit of prey.

❃ Dilophosaurus lived during the Early Jurassic, when the continents were arranged very differently from today and much of its world was covered by lush vegetation and seasonal waterways. Fossils discovered in Arizona have provided important clues about this early theropod and the ecosystems it inhabited. Long vanished yet instantly recognisable by its distinctive twin crests, Dilophosaurus stands as one of the most striking predators from the dawn of the age of dinosaurs.
