Their striking countershaded coloring provides essential camouflage while hunting, blending them with the dark depths from above and the bright sea surface from below. Capable of repeated dives to forage for small schooling fish, squid, and krill, they spend up to eighty percent of their lives at sea.

❃ Little penguins are famous for their cautious land habits, returning ashore only under the cover of dusk in synchronized groups known as a "penguin parade" to avoid birds of prey. After waddling up sandy beaches, they retreat into underground burrows, rock crevices, or sea caves to rest and care for their chicks.
