❃ Striding across the ancient landscapes of Patagonia during the final chapters of the Cretaceous, Carnotaurus was one of the strangest large predators ever to walk South America. Its name means “meat-eating bull,” inspired by the pair of thick horns rising above its eyes, while its deep skull, powerful neck, and long hind limbs gave it a distinctive silhouette unlike that of other theropods. Living roughly 69–71 million years ago, it was a large abelisaurid predator reaching around 8 metres in length.

Its forelimbs were extraordinarily short, even by theropod standards, while its powerful hind legs suggest a body adapted for rapid movement. The purpose of its horns remains uncertain — they may have played a role in display or interactions between members of its own species — leaving one of its most recognizable features wrapped in evolutionary mystery. Fossilized skin impressions also reveal a scaly body covered in a mosaic of small scales and larger irregular bumps.
