❃ The silk moth (Bombyx mori) is one of the few insects whose history is deeply intertwined with our own. Domesticated from wild silk moth ancestors in China thousands of years ago, it has been raised by humans for generations to produce silk. Today, the species is so thoroughly domesticated that adult silk moths have lost the ability to fly effectively and depend almost entirely on human care.
❃ The real silk-making happens during the caterpillar stage. Known as silkworms, the larvae feed primarily on mulberry leaves before producing a continuous strand of protein fiber to spin a protective cocoon around themselves. A single cocoon can contain hundreds of meters of incredibly fine silk, which can be carefully unwound and woven into the smooth, lustrous fabric treasured around the world.
❃ Adult silk moths emerge with creamy white bodies, feathery antennae, and soft wings, but their adult lives are remarkably brief. They do not eat, instead relying on energy stored during their caterpillar stage while focusing entirely on reproduction. From a leaf-munching caterpillar to the source of one of history's most prized natural fibers, the silk moth is a remarkable example of the centuries-old relationship between humans and insects.
