ONE UNUSUAL SHRIMP

❃ More than half a billion years ago, when most animals were still relatively small, Anomalocaris was among the largest predators of the Cambrian seas. Reaching up to around 3 feet (1 meter) in length, it moved through the water using a series of flexible swimming flaps along its sides. At the front were two spiny grasping appendages for capturing prey and a distinctive circular mouth—an anatomy so unusual that scientists initially struggled to understand what kind of creature they had discovered.

❃ Its name means "unlike other shrimp," a fitting legacy of one of paleontology's most famous fossil mix-ups. When its remains were first studied from Canada's Burgess Shale, different body parts were mistakenly identified as belonging to entirely separate creatures. Its frontal appendage was thought to be a shrimp-like animal, while its circular mouth was interpreted as a jellyfish. Only decades later did researchers realize these strange fossils belonged to different parts of the same remarkable animal.

❃ Anomalocaris also possessed exceptionally sophisticated compound eyes, with fossil specimens revealing thousands of individual lenses. This impressive vision would have been invaluable for navigating and hunting in the Cambrian ocean. As one of the most iconic animals of the Cambrian Explosion, Anomalocaris offers a fascinating glimpse into a time when complex ecosystems, new body plans, and increasingly sophisticated predators were transforming life in Earth's ancient seas.
