DINOSAUR IN NEED OF A PAL

❃ Spinosaurus means “spine lizard,” a name inspired by the enormous neural spines extending from its backbone. These bones supported the dinosaur’s unmistakable sail-like structure, which may have been used for display or communication. This extraordinary predator lived in North Africa roughly 100 million years ago, roaming a landscape filled with vast rivers, wetlands, enormous fish, and other prehistoric creatures.

❃ Unlike most giant carnivorous dinosaurs, Spinosaurus had several adaptations associated with life around water. Its long, crocodile-like jaws were lined with conical teeth suited for gripping slippery prey, while fossils reveal dense bones and a large, paddle-like tail. Fish were an important part of its diet, making Spinosaurus one of the most unusual large predatory dinosaurs ever discovered.

❃ At an estimated 46–49 feet (14–15 meters) long, Spinosaurus ranks among the longest known carnivorous dinosaurs. It also lived tens of millions of years before Tyrannosaurus rex, meaning these two famous giants never encountered one another. With its towering sail, enormous body, and remarkable adaptations, Spinosaurus continues to challenge what we thought we knew about predatory dinosaurs.
