❃ Moving gracefully across freshwater lakes, marshes, ponds, and slow-moving waterways throughout Eurasia, the Eurasian coot is a distinctive waterbird recognised by its deep black plumage and bright white bill and forehead shield. Its rounded body, long toes, and strong legs give it a sturdy appearance, while its broad lobed feet help it move confidently through water and muddy vegetation.

❃ Although it often swims like a duck, the Eurasian coot is not a duck at all. It belongs to the rail family and spends much of its time diving beneath the surface for aquatic plants, algae, and small aquatic animals. It can also graze along the water's edge, using its powerful bill to pull apart vegetation and search through mud for food. When taking flight, it often runs across the surface of the water, beating its wings rapidly as its feet splash behind it.

❃ Found across much of Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, the Eurasian coot thrives in a wide variety of wetlands and can even live in urban ponds and reservoirs. Highly territorial during breeding season, pairs defend their nesting areas with noisy chases and aggressive displays. Hardy, adaptable, and surprisingly athletic, the Eurasian coot is a familiar yet fascinating presence wherever calm freshwater meets dense aquatic vegetation.
