❃ High in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the orangutan moves through the canopy with a remarkable combination of strength, balance, and patience. Its long arms, powerful hands, and shaggy reddish-orange coat make it instantly recognizable, while its expressive face reflects the intelligence of one of the world's great apes. The name orangutan means “person of the forest,” a fitting description for this highly capable tree-dweller.

❃ Orangutans spend much of their lives above the ground, using their exceptionally long arms to swing between branches and navigate the forest canopy. Their strong hands and feet can grasp branches securely, while their flexible bodies allow them to move carefully through even dense vegetation. Fruits form a major part of their diet, supplemented by leaves, bark, insects, and other forest foods when available.

❃ Found today on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, orangutans are largely solitary compared with many other great apes. Mothers form especially strong bonds with their young, teaching them how to find food, build sleeping nests, and safely travel through the canopy. As vital seed dispersers of the rainforest, orangutans help shape the forests they call home — making their survival important not only to the species itself, but to the ecosystem around it.
