❃ Long before dinosaurs walked the Earth, Dunkleosteus ruled the seas of the Late Devonian period roughly 360 million years ago. This extraordinary armored fish belonged to an extinct group known as placoderms and carried a massive shield of interlocking bony plates around its head and upper body. One of the largest predators of its environment, Dunkleosteus occupied the top of an ancient marine food web filled with early sharks, armored fish, and other strange inhabitants of the Devonian oceans.

Modern research has even challenged older estimates that portrayed it as a 30-foot giant, suggesting some species may have been considerably shorter but much more compact and heavily built.
