Standing over five metres at the shoulder and stretching nearly eight metres from nose to tail, it weighed an estimated fifteen to twenty tonnes — heavier than three modern bull elephants combined. Despite the scale, it was a true rhinoceros relative, hornless and long-necked, with a build closer to a giraffe than to any rhino alive today.

Fossils have been found across a vast range, from Pakistan and China to Kazakhstan and the Balkans, suggesting a wide-ranging herbivore that moved freely across the warm forests of early Oligocene Asia.

❃ Paraceratherium vanished around twenty-three million years ago, as global cooling shrank the lush woodlands it depended on and replaced them with drier, more open grasslands.
