❃ The Pacific sea nettle (Chrysaora fuscescens) is a spectacular jellyfish found along the Pacific coast of North America. Its golden-brown bell can be decorated with reddish markings, while long, delicate tentacles and frilly oral arms trail gracefully behind it. Though it appears to drift effortlessly with the current, rhythmic contractions of its bell allow the sea nettle to propel itself through the water.

❃ Those beautiful trailing tentacles are also effective hunting tools. Thousands of specialized stinging cells called nematocysts fire microscopic, venom-bearing structures when prey makes contact, helping the jellyfish capture zooplankton, small fish, crustaceans, and other gelatinous animals. Its oral arms then move captured food toward the mouth, turning an elegant ocean drifter into a surprisingly capable predator.

❃ Like other jellyfish, the Pacific sea nettle has no brain, heart, or bones. Instead, a simple nerve net helps coordinate swimming and respond to its surroundings, while its body consists largely of water. With its flowing tentacles, translucent bell, and ancient body plan, the Pacific sea nettle is a mesmerizing example of how something so seemingly simple can thrive as an effective ocean predator.
