❃ Few prehistoric animals are as instantly recognizable as Tyrannosaurus rex. Its name means “tyrant lizard king,” an appropriate title for one of the largest predators of Late Cretaceous North America. Living roughly 68 to 66 million years ago, T. rex was a formidable hunter that likely also scavenged carcasses whenever an easy meal presented itself.

❃ An adult T. rex could reach around 40 feet (12 meters) in length and weigh several tons, supported by immensely powerful hind legs and a heavy tail for balance. Its enormous skull carried thick, serrated teeth capable of crushing bone, while its famously tiny arms ended in two clawed fingers. Despite their size, those arms were surprisingly muscular—they simply couldn't reach the dinosaur's mouth.

❃ T. rex inhabited forests, floodplains, and river systems across what is now western North America until the mass extinction 66 million years ago. Fossils reveal healed injuries, bite marks, and other clues that continue to reshape our understanding of how these animals lived. Powerful, imposing, and endlessly fascinating, the “king of the dinosaurs” remains one of the greatest icons of prehistoric life.
