❃ The common pigeon, better known as the rock pigeon (Columba livia), has become one of the most familiar birds on Earth. Originally associated with rocky cliffs across parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia, domesticated pigeons traveled around the world with people, and their descendants now thrive in towns and cities almost everywhere. Buildings, bridges, and ledges provide surprisingly good substitutes for the cliffs their wild ancestors called home.

Scientists believe their navigation combines several sources of information, including the position of the sun, visual landmarks, odors, and sensitivity to Earth's magnetic field. Humans have taken advantage of this remarkable homing ability for centuries, using specially bred carrier pigeons to transport messages across long distances.

❃ Look closely at a seemingly ordinary city pigeon and you'll find an impressively capable bird. Pigeons can recognize visual patterns, learn complex tasks, and distinguish between individual objects and images. They are also powerful fliers and devoted parents, with both males and females producing nutrient-rich “crop milk” to feed their chicks. Familiar though they may be, the humble pigeon is anything but ordinary.

When It Arrives

Don’t worry if yours looks a little flattened when first unpacked — the filling is designed to bounce back and simply needs a little time and fluffing to take its full shape.

Bringing it back to form:

1. Remove it from the packaging as soon as it arrives — don’t leave it packed.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
