❃ Sawsharks are among the ocean's most unusual predators, instantly recognizable by their long, flattened snouts lined with sharp, tooth-like projections. Belonging to the family Pristiophoridae, these remarkable sharks inhabit continental shelves and deeper waters in parts of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Their extraordinary snouts, known as rostra, give them the appearance of carrying a miniature saw wherever they swim.

❃ That saw-like snout is far more than an unusual feature. Sawsharks use it to detect and capture prey, sweeping it from side to side to strike small fish and other animals hiding near the seafloor. Sensitive electroreceptors along the rostrum help them locate prey by detecting faint electrical signals produced by living organisms. A pair of slender barbels beneath the snout provides additional sensory information as they investigate their surroundings.

❃ Although they resemble sawfish, sawsharks belong to a different group of cartilaginous fish. Unlike sawfish, which are rays, sawsharks typically have barbels along their snouts and gill slits positioned on the sides of their heads rather than underneath their bodies. Most species are relatively small compared with larger sharks, but their specialized hunting equipment makes them remarkably effective predators. Strange, elusive, and equipped with one of nature's most distinctive feeding tools, the sawshark is a fascinating example of evolution beneath the waves.

When It Arrives

Don’t worry if yours looks a little flattened when first unpacked — the filling is designed to bounce back and simply needs a little time and fluffing to take its full shape.

Bringing it back to form:

1. Remove it from the packaging as soon as it arrives — don’t leave it packed.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.

The shark was exactly as pictured and arrived within the time frame given. I think it’s a bit expensive for a stuffed animal, but my daughter is a Marine Biology major and put it on her Christmas list.
